Chapter Seventeen
Audrey
âDo you ever think about changing jobs?â
Elisse ices a cookie with precision.
I stir another batch of dough with more force than necessary.
âMore and more often,â I say through my teeth.
âThe boys told us what she wants,â Clarissa says, passing me the chocolate chips. âThey also mentioned how determined you are to find the owner of the B&B.â
Iâm beginning to care less and less about it. My curiosity spurs me on more than anything. And the fact my bank account will have nothing more than an echo in it if I donât.
Elisse places a hand on my arm. âYou need a plan B.â
A plan B? Iâve worked so hard to get where I am. I pursued a degree in hospitality management and didn't stop until I found the career I wanted. Branding and compliance excite me. Itâs what I'm great at. The six years Iâve tolerated Aurora and her impossible ways because the day-to-day grind is fulfilling were worth it. At least it was until I crashed into Winter Valley.
It must be the snow. Or all these damn cookies. I havenât eaten this many since I was a kid, and maybe not even then. My mother probably wouldnât have let me.
âUm, Unicorn?â Clarissa points at the bowl in front of me. Iâm no longer stirring the dough but stabbing it.
I drop the spatula. The wooden handle clangs against the side of the glass bowl. I brace my hands on the edge of the kitchen counter.
âAll this stress isnât good for you.â
Like Elisse is one to talk. Sheâs received so many text messages today that she finally turned off her phone. Clarissa has done the same. They work with bridezillas all day long, but they look . . . happy?
Iâm sure if I saw myself in a mirror, I would not. Well, I would have a few hours ago because Iâd forgotten about my job and been consumed by this family.
âIs it always like this here?â I ask quietly.
âCold? And full of nosy neighbors?â Clarissa shrugs. âPretty much.â
I snort. The cold isnât so bad. And the nosy neighbors arenât either.
âItâs impossible to do anything without Mrs. Pollard knowing,â Elisse chimes in. âThough Iâve never had my lover caught sneaking out of the B&B.â
Unlike me. Does everyone know about that?
âThatâs because youâve never slept with anyone there.â Clarissa gives her a pointed look. Elisse is smug, and her sisterâs eyes round. âYou have? Who?â
âThe best man at the Franklin wedding two summers ago.â
Clarissa smacks her on the arm. âShut. Up.â Then she smacks her again. âHow could you not tell me?â
âI broke a rule. We donât sleep with anyone in the wedding party. Or guests.â
Clarissa scowls as she swipes a glob of cookie dough onto her finger. âYou shouldâve told me.â She pops it into her mouth.
âYou canât blame me.â Elisse waves her hand around. âThis place isnât exactly brimming with eligible bachelors. All three of your ex-boyfriends are married.â
âThereâs a reason theyâre my exes.â Clarissa shoves more cookie dough in her mouth.
